Winter Whale Week is celebrated along the Oregon coast during the last week of December. It is never certain whether it will be a good time to see the whales, but usually it is. Up to 18,0000 gray whales swim along the Oregon Coast during their winter migration. You may also see Humpback whales.
Visiting the lighthouses of the Oregon Coast can give you a perspective on the raw power of the weather, the waves and the seas of the Oregon Coast. It is a rugged area and lighthouses were built to guide ships at sea to safety. The short Cape Meares Lighthouse sits on a beautiful point.
Sometimes the best time to go to a place is the off season. That certainly pertains to the Oregon Coast. Not only have the summer tourists left, many of the accommodations offer winter rates. In the northern and central coast you can walk the beach alone, if you wish. You can hike the wooded trails in dripping dewy fog and snuggle in front of a fireplace during a storm.
