While walking the scenic paved path around the impressive Chambers Bay Golf Course near Tacoma it is hard to avoid noticing the activity and excitement. The 115th U.S. Open Championship will be played at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, WA (near Tacoma) on June 15th – 21st, 2015. This is the first time the prestigious U.S. Open championship has been played in the state of Washington.
They will be playing at the course I surveyed as I walked around the perimiter, a course developed from what was once a sand and gravel pit. Now a beautiful venue overlooking the Tacoma Narrows, Chambers Bay will greet golfers, visitors and tourists this June. The Scottish-style links course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. is considered to be one of the most challenging courses in the country. It is worth seeing, even if you are not a golf fan.
So where to stay? Just across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, you’ll find a respite from the traffic and crowds expected during the U.S. Open. Gig Harbor is a small historic city with plenty to do and see. And, you’ll be able to take a deep breath and relax once you cross over the bridge. There are fine dining restaurants as well as dockside pubs. There is a craft distillery with two beautiful tasting room sites.
The area offers bed and breakfast accommodations, boutique inns, convenient chain hotels and vacation rental homes. I recommend staying in the historic area in sight of the water.
If you play golf yourself, you’ll be pleased to know that the Gig Harbor area is home to many golf courses including Gold Mountain, Canterwood, Trophy Lake, McCormick Woods, Madrona Links, and Gig Harbor Golf Club.
If you are traveling with your family, there are great things to do ranging from harbor boat excursions to kayaking and from museums to pottery making opportunities.
Gig Harbor is just minutes away from Chambers Bay, over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. You can combine the excitement of the U.S. Open with the peaceful natural and historic beauty of this harbor town.
