Theme for October 5, 2013’s Zombie Walk: Jersey Strong Alive. And what a turnout on this beautiful day in October: Zombies, after zombie muddled along, and zombie enthusiasists came out in droves.
The actual Zombie counting started at 3 PM EST, and about an hour and fifteen minutes later at 4:45, all approved zombies had passed through the turnstiles to be counted. The regulations for authorized zombies were as follows by the Guinness Book of World Records: white faces, blood markings, and sucken eyes, costumes and masks were approved also.
Makeup artists worked for free, donated funds for applying makeup ($5) to an organization to feed the hungry. These unpaid artists worked tirelessly, applying white faces, blood drippings, scars, and sucken eyes from 10 AM in the morning up until the last minute before all of the “undead” were counted and tabulated.
Many of the zombies applied their own art, setting up face paint on benches overlooking beach and ocean, shredding their clothing to look the part of the undead, working feverishly to come out looking gorry and eerie. There were a variety of zombies: the best-dress zombies were one of my favorites.
The weather held up and thousands upon thousands flocked into Asbury Park as first-timers, totally in awe of the event. For veteran zombies and onlookers, the event was a total sucess as the number to beat was 8400 zombies, the 2012 winners from Minnisota, and for Saturday, October 5, 2013, Asbury Park won back the Guinness award havinig more than 9500 zombies go through the turnstiles.
If there were 9500 that went through to be counted, at least double that amount were onlookers, cheering on the Jersey Shore, who had taken the award in 2011 only to lose it again in 2012.
Jersey Strong Live the motto of the event since the Jersey Shore was trashed by Super Storm was embraced by all as the theme of the 2013 zombie walk.
And so we have the Zombie Walk win for at least another year. Hooray for Asbury Park and the Jersey Shore Live, the promotors and friends. We couldn’t do it without you.
