When you land at Sandspit Airport or arrive by ferry from Skidegate, you will be destined for a relaxing time on the island. Staying at a homey place with gardens and a view of Shingle Bay off Skidegate Inlet can only enhance your experience.
Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, is located north of Vancouver Island. It is a place of history, natural beauty and Haida Culture. A big draw for visitors is the quality fishing. But for me, a stay in Haida Gwaii proved to be a real getaway, a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Bayview Garden B&B
Located in a historic house with additional quarters to ensure that guests have a choice of accommodations, Bayview Garden is a homey place to stay. You can talk to the manager, Flavien Mabit, about a configuration that will best suit you. Ask, also about the pricing.
There is a separate building that would be ideal for a small group or family. This year Flavien offered some hostel/dormitory type accommodations as well.
Bayview is very homey. There is a lovely kitchen with windows overlooking the garden and water. The host prepares a warm breakfast for B&B guests and if you are a hostel guest you can use the facilities to cook your own meal. Some ingredients are provided such as granola. Flavien’s touches give this area a French country feel.
Laundry facilities are available for a small fee.
Decor is “beachy” with eclectic, comfortable furniture. There is a living room with couches surrounding a wood stove.
But what is endearing about the Bayview Garden B&B are the flower and vegetable gardens and expansive lawn. There are chairs, bench and hammock for your relaxing pleasure. Across the little road is a bench overlooking the beach. At low tide you can enjoy tide-pooling along with the eagles. When I was there, just down the road was a huge eagles nest and you could see the little eagle heads popping up whenever the adults approached with food.
Within walking distance is the island store which has a wide variety of offerings. There are other accommodations along Beach Road as well. Also within walking distance is an island pizza restaurant. Watch the game with a brew or take your family over for pizza night. Bicycles are provided to guests and the island road is ideal for casual biking.
Bayview Garden is an ideal place to stay if you want a laid back environment that is as close to home as possible. You can barbque your salmon catch outside, pick a few flowers for your room and savor a glass of wine as you watch the magnificent sunset.
