I really get into the holiday season and everything that goes with it; shopping, wrapping, get togethers with friends and family, and the food.  Most of all I love the holiday cookies.  That’s why each December I give myself a break and do something that has become over the years a tradition for me, the Mount Washington Valley Inn to Inn Candy and Cookie Tour. It’s my way to kick back for a weekend and leave the word “diet” out of my vocabulary.

The first tour took place in 1996 and was the brain child of a group of innkeepers wanting to fill empty rooms at a slow time of year by offering guests inn tours and homemade cookies.

Sprinkle into this pristine surroundings, hot cider, cocoa and wine, decadent cookies, inns trimmed in gorgeous holiday decorations and you have a wonderful (and caloric) weekend filling guest rooms with cookie aficionados squirreling away bags of cookies to take home.

This year the twelve participating inns will host a Christmas tree decorated by a local business.  At each inn, after your cookie sampling and tour, be sure to vote for your favorite tree.  The winners get monetary donations for the non-profit organizations to which each tree is dedicated.

How to Take the Tour
The best way to start the Cookie Tour is by heading north to Hart’s Location then working your way south to the last in inn Chocorua . Map and DirectionsHoliday Dining Room

The Notchland Inn, an 1860’s granite mansion nestled into the White Mountains National Forest, boasts elegantly decorate rooms, suites and cottages, all with wood burning fireplaces.  Silver trays holding holiday cookies are placed throughout the inn.

Yankee magazine has called the Inn at Ellis River “a great romantic retreat” walking in the front door you can feel why; with soft music tinkling in the background and the air filled with the aroma of cookies baking the inn exudes peace and serenity.  Each room is filled with antiques and period furniture; many have Jacuzzis, hot tubs, and fireplaces.

The award winning Riverbend Inn boasts ten guest rooms in stunning color palettes of reds, greens, oranges and blues.  The downstairs rooms hold exemplary Asian art collected by innkeepers Jerry Weiss and Craig Cox.  Craig is a trained chef, keep your fingers crossed that he prepares his famous lemon poppy seed ice box cookies for the tour.  The living room window seat overlooking the Chocorua River is an ideal spot for munching your cookies and candies while reflecting on your gastronomic weekend.
