La Paloma de Tubac: A great place to shop in Southern Arizona

There are galleries and souvenir shops in Tubac, Arizona. But just outside the main historic shopping area, down the street from the venerable St. Ann’s Church, is La Paloma de Tubac. You’ll know you are there because of all the enticing pottery in the courtyard. The outside shop is filled with beautiful colorful folk pottery and the inside holds treasures ranging from Peruvian pottery to Talavera pottery dishes to colorful vests and cotton clothing. If you love that South of the Border look, La Paloma de Tubac is an important stop for shopping, sightseeing and photography. And nowadays, it is not safe to cross the border to Mexico for a little shopping. So La Paloma does that for you.

La Paloma de Tubac is located at One Presidio Drive, Tubac, Arizona 85646. It’s a quick walk from the historic shopping district, St. Ann’s Church (just down the street from the church) or the Tubac Presidio State Park.  Their phone number is 520.398.9231. Call to make sure of their operating hours before you visit.

The pottery in the outside yard is incredibly varied and colorful. Enjoy perusing the pottery and then head inside the historic adobe where you will find traditional crafts and folk art from Mexico, Brazil and across Latin America. The Green family has purchased pieces for over 20 years and has great sources in the Sierra Madre of Mexico to the Amazon Basin of Brazil.

I found the pottery, especially the Talavera pieces, to be of high quality and very reasonably priced. After shopping throughout the Southwest, I found the selection and pricing at La Paloma to be the best of the shops I have visited.  And, like I mentioned, you don’t have to cross the border to go shopping!

You can travel to Latin America, go to the pottery source in Mexico or, simply,  just stop by beautiful Tubac and visit La Paloma de Tubac. It’s a great place to purchase accent pieces for your new home or for unique and beautiful gifts.

Whether you need a pot for your patio or a beautiful hand-crafted mirror for your hallway, I would certainly give La Paloma a try. It’s always on my list of places to stop when I go to Tubac for the annual Tubac Festival of the Arts.
