Believe it or not, New Mexican food is very different from Mexican food. But if you want a little taste of Mexico coupled with Mexican-style courtyard dining, head just north of downtown Santa Fe to Gabriel’s. Gabriel’s has long been a favorite of Santa Fe locals. The restaurant is located under shady trees close to the Santa Fe Opera off Hwy 285/84.
You’ll enjoy the setting. Inside, the dining rooms are decorated with art. Outside you’ll be transported back to old Mexico in a courtyard surrounding a beautiful fountain.
Most who dine at Gabriel’s rave about the Guacamole which is skillfully made to your order tableside. Next to us, a table of men were asking for more and more chopped jalapeno in their Guacamole. I enjoyed a small entre at a small price accompanied by a golden margarita. My dining companion splurged on steak fajitas (still under $20).
The restaurant can get busy during opera season so try to avoid the opera crowd. I found the courtyard to be both relaxing and fun.
I highly recommend Gabriel’s whether you just want to get out of town or you are returning from a drive in the country.

I clicked on the link for the guacamole recipe at Gabriel’s but it took me to another site…no recipe to be found there.
I’ll definitely check out the restaurant when we get into town though! Sounds wonderful!
I fixed the guacamole link!
If a restaurant has good Margaritas and Guacamole, you know everything else has got to be good. Love the table side version.
Sounds like a good place to go.
