Las Vegas overwhelms me but just south of Vegas is a fun patch of desert along the Colorado River that is just right.
I’ve been to Laughlin many times, mostly because it was an annual destination for my walking organization. We found the hotels very reasonably priced, the walkways along the Colorado fun to explore and the food plentiful. But RVers, snowbirds and gamblers love Laughlin too. It is a great destination for a little winter sunshine.
Laughlin is right on the border of California and Nevada, across the Colorado River from Bullhead City, AZ. It’s an easy drive from Las Vegas and from points in Arizona. Our recent story on Oatman and Route 66 is one stop you can make when you are traveling to or from Laughlin. Map
What You Will See
Laughlin is a gambling town. The casino hotels dot the Colorado through the main part of town. The town offers many special events ranging from Rodeo to car shows. And, of course, there are gambling tournaments.
When you stay in Laughlin you can enjoy the Colorado River. You might want to rent jet skis or take a boat trip up the river. Unlike other gaming destinations, Laughlin sits on the banks of the fifth longest river in the nation, the Colorado River. The town’s location attracts thousands each year who flock to its shores to enjoy the water and relax with all the amenities of a resort destination. Water enthusiasts launch their boats, ride the waves on skis and other personal watercraft, relax on scenic cruises and do some good old-fashioned fishing.
The river is beautiful . That is something Las Vegas doesn’t have. I enjoy dining at the Prime Rib Room at the Riverside Resort and watching the reflection of the sunset on the river. An early morning walk along Laughlin’s walkways will give you another view of the river. If you drive up to Davis Dam, across the river, you can picnic or fish. There’s an RV park there as well.
At the Riverside Resort, you might want to visit Don Laughlin’s Car Musem. It’s open daily and admission is free.
You can also go bowling, see a movie or take your gambling winnings to the local mall. There are several golf courses in the area.
Places to Stay
There are quite a few casino hotels, but I’ve always favored the original hotel, Don Laughlin’s Riverside. If you stay there, make sure you have a river view. Most hotels offer specials to draw the gambling crowds in. Book Online and Save.
There are many RV Parks in the area. The Riverside has a multi-level RV park right in the downtown area across from their hotel.
