Several traditional families own and operate orchards surround Kansas City. Bring your kids and your camera, u-pick orchards are a family tradition in the Kansas City Area.

Kids learn where their food comes from, and they love to pick their very own fruit. Call the orchard and check the hours before you make the drive.

Alldredge Orchards – Pick your own apples, choose a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, visit with the animals, and play at spacious playground. Indulge in a tasty treat, or take home a homemade apple pie from the bakery. Be sure to visit the century-old barn, filled with apples, pumpkins, charming giftware, huge mums, candles, honey, and all the delights of the season.

Schweizer Orchards – one of the largest u-pick apple orchards in the area. Schweizer Orchards visitors come from Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas on annual apple picking trips. This orchard grows Jonathan, Jonagold, Gala, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji, Honey Crisp and Winesap apples.

Wagon Wheel Orchard – The Wagon Wheel Orchard grows 133 varieties of apples. The Wagon Wheel is open to visitors for picking on weekends. Call ahead for the picking report!

Weston Red Barn Farm – This working farm is a trip to the country for city kids! The Weston Red Barn Farm is one of the largest area farms with fruit available for picking daily. As well as picking apples, children love to visit the sheep, ponies, chickens, geese and pigs at the farm.

Apple varieties you are likely to see at local orchards:

  • Golden Delicious – golden to light yellow-green, keeps its shape and flavor during baking.
  • Gala – crisp, yellowish-white, sweet flesh with red or golden skin with red striping
  • Fuji – super sweet, super juicy, super crisp, great for snacking
  • Granny Smith – green, crisp, great for salads and fresh eating
  • Gold Rush – golden, bronze apple with a sweet flavor, great for fresh eating.
