The St. Louis Floral Conservatory or the City of St. Louis Floral Display House is best known as the Jewel Box. The greenhouse is in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri.

The Jewel Box has over 4,000 panes of glass set in wood and wrought iron supports. Eight fixed arches support the greenhouses weight. A beautifully landscaped reflecting pool welcomes visitors to the Jewelbox.

The St Louis jewel is on the National Historic Register. The Jewel Box was given the designation on the National Register because it is, “locally significant in the area of architecture. The Art Deco building is an outstanding example of greenhouse design.”

Special shows are a seasonal tradition. Shows include: Poinsettia (Christmas), Azalea (early spring), Easter lily, Hydrangea (Mother’s Day), Summer Display, and the Mum display in (October)

Getting there – The Jewel Box, located on a 17-acre site in Forest Park, was built by the City of St. Louis in 1936. Hours for the Jewel Box are: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $1 but it is free from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday and Tuesday. Where to eat The Boat House Stop here for a casual lunch or dinner; inside or on the lakeside patio while watching the boaters paddle on Post-Dispatch Lake. Enjoy live music at the Boathouse Fridays and Saturdays summers through early September.

Stop by for a glass of wine or beer, lunch or dinner. We ordered Dock Nachos with refried beans and tomatillo salsa for $7.15. As a starter, it’s big enough for four people to share. Fish (cod) & Chips are a Boathouse Favorite at $8.45. The Chopped Salad or Greek salad are tasty and lightly dressed, good summer choices. Moonlight Paddleboat Picnic for two – boats launch at dusk every Thursday and must be back by 10:30 p.m. Your paddleboat will have a picnic basket is furnished with flatbread sandwiches, fruit, cheese, olives, Billy Goat chips, chocolate biscotti and a bottle of wine or bucket of beer.
