San Antonio is for families – Westin La Cantera goes all out for kids

Activites, Outings and Supervision for the Kids at the Westin Kids Club

San Antonio’s Westin La Cantera is an ideal home base for exploring San Antonio with your family. With special children’s programming, family fun and a relaxing environment for Mom and Dad, your summer getaway will have something for everyone.

Westin La Cantera Children’s Programming
The Westin Kids Club, for children 4 – 12, provides kids with active educational experiences during their San Antonio family adventure.  Knowledgeable staff supervise a range of activities for kids. They’ll come back with hand-made crafts, tired from outdoor activities and happy with the kid-oriented meals. Activities are geared toward the individual child.

Fun doesn’t stop at the Kid’s Club. On my summer venture to La Cantera, I enjoyed seeing children’s faces as they rounded a corner and came face to face with huge inflatable bounce houses and water slides.

Teens won’t be left out. There is a special gathering place for teens at the resort where they can play video games and hang out in a safe environment.

Special Family Entertainment
Families eagerly await the daily list of activities held at the resort. Now, where else can you fall in love with a two-toed Sloth, hold a huge lizard or learn about dinosaurs from

Dinosaur George Blassing?  In 2007 he co-created, wrote and hosted a 12 part series for The History Channel called Jurassic Fight Club.

Even meals can be a treat for the young set. During a buffet breakfast we were joined by Looney Tunes characters. They have such personality and are not at all camera shy.

Amazingly, adults enjoy these activities as much as the kids do! It’s an opportunity to find the hidden child in you no matter what your age.

Family Time
Want to spend a little unstructured family time? Take your children on a hike along the resort’s nature trail. Signs will tell you about the flora and fauna. If you go in the early morning or at sunset, you might encounter a deer or wild turkey.

Summer is a good opportunity to head to the pool. With pools for toddlers and for older kids, families will enjoy hanging out. As the sun sets, head over to the large fire ring and roast marshmallows.

Head in to San Antonio
Just down the road you will encounter Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The resort shuttle will take you down and pick you up. The park features themed areas including the Fiesta Bay Boardwalk and Armadillo Beach Waterpark, and, of course, the signature rides such as the “Super Krypton Coaster,” the largest steel and floorless coaster in the southwest. If that is not enough, you can experience “Scream,” a 200-foot turbo drop ride and “Lone Star Lagoon,” a giant wave pool shaped like Texas.

Just across town is another huge theme park, Sea World. SeaWorld also has coaster rides and water parks but what most families want to experience are the shows. With a new Orca show open this summer, SeaWorld continues to thrill families with their Orca, porpoise and whale shows.  For children who are not lucky enough to see these beautiful, intelligent creatures in the wild, SeaWorld offers a good opportunity.

If you want to provide your family with a very special experience consider scheduling a special close-up and personal encounter with animals such as the Beluga Whales, Sea Lions or Dolphins. Families will don wet suits and get in the water with the animals.

We came away with a deeper understanding of Beluga whales after going through the Beluga encounter. Where else can you actually touch the fleshy head of a huge white whale, see them respond to trainers cues (and sometimes not), and end the experience with a photo of a special “kiss” with the trained whale.

More San Antonio
Of course San Antonio has a ton of things for families to do. Visit the historic Alamo, walk the grounds of the old Missions, take a boat ride on the San Antonio River or visit a museum. While there are many things to do, what we heard echoed was that kids have so much fun at the resort, they may not want to leave!

A Family Resort
We have experienced the Westin La Cantera at different times of year, and love the comfortable rooms, spacious grounds, excellent dining and attentive staff but what we all concluded after a summer stay is that the Westin La Cantera is all about family fun!
