Stay at the Mabel Dodge Luhan home in Taos

Mabel Dodge Luhan House in TaosMabel Dodge Luhan House in TaosAuthor and socialite, Mabel Dodge Luhan fell in love with Taos, New Mexico. She came to Taos in 1919 with her third husband, an artist. In her book, Edge of Taos Desert: An Escape to Reality, she writes beautifully about how she fell in love with Taos after being drawn there from the east coast. She writes so beautifully, in fact, that you, too, will want to experience Taos.

When Luhan first arrived in New Mexico by train from the east coast, she stayed in Santa Fe. Interestingly, she didn’t like Santa Fe because people were not genuine enough. She wrote about there being way too many “tea parties.”

If you are traveling to Taos, I highly suggest reading Luhan’s book. You’ll be armed with a little Taos history, but more importantly, you’ll get the feeling of northern New Mexico through the eyes of Luhan who cherished the area.

Shortly after Mable moved to Taos, she met Taos Pueblo Native American, Tony Luhan. She eventually divorced her husband and married Luhan. This unconventional union flourished.  Mabel Dodge Luhan hosted many famous Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taosauthors and artists in her Taos home.

Georgia O’Keeffe’s first visit to New Mexico was to Mabel Dodge Luhan’s home in Taos. D.H. Lawrence, Martha Graham, Ansel Adams and Karl Jung and many other famous and creative people were her guests.

Even before I read Luhan’s wonderful book, I stumbled upon her home in Taos on the border of the Taos Pueblo. The Mabel Dodge Luhan House is now a B & B and small conference center. If you have a sense of history and yearn to experience the beauty of Taos as Luhan did, staying at her home is a wonderful opportunity. It is a peaceful place with large trees and gardens for wandering.Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taos

You can stay in O’Keeffe’s former room or one that another famous guest occupied. Some rooms have fireplaces and there are some rooms with shared baths. You’ll join other guests in the cozy dining area for a full gourmet breakfast each morning.
