Monmouth County: More of the Shore, Sea Bright, New Jersey

When you head south on Route 36 (the beach route) from the Atlantic Highlands, in less than ten minutes you’ll be in the borough of Sea Bright, New Jersey.

Early in the 1840’s, according to Sea Bright’s website, there was a small cluster of wooden shacks huddled in the tall grass and dunes.  It was known as the village of Nauvoo, literally meaning “beautiful of pleasant place.”

The borough of Sea Bright has its beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean; it’s also the borough where the Navasink and Shrewsbury Rivers flow, making this town an exceptional waterway for boats and water activity.

Most of the town’s restaurants are on the Navasink River, but Sea Bright is also known for their private beach clubs.  They have seven beach private clubs, a sports club, and some of the best night spots on the Jersey Shore.

Sea Bright, New Jersey

Sea Bright attracts young families, college-aged students, and a professional crowd that frequent the restaurants on the Navasink:  McLoone’s Riverside, The Quay, Elements Longue and Angelica’s Restaurant.

Many travelers to the Sea Bright area are interested in soaking up the sun by day and checking out the fun by night.  Almost everything is in walking distance from the 520 Bridge from Rumson, New Jersey where Sea Bright begins.

Ichabod’s Bar & Grill caters to the college crowd and is located at 1 E Church Street, on the ocean side, which is great location for romantic walks on the beach after dinner. Ichabod’s has an extensive menu, with something for everyone.  The price range is moderate and they accept credit cards.  Attire is casual.  While Ichabod’s comfortabley accommodates groups and families, they also offer take out for those who would rather eat at home or on the beach.  Restaurateurs on the Navasink River side provide private docking facilities and walking piers for their clientele who prefers to voyage over by boat from Staten Island, New York, as well as from other parts of the Jersey Shore.

Tiki bar at Dockside on the Navasink

The Dockside is one of those restaurants. The Dockside has a tiki bar where diners can congregate and enjoy a martini or a cold beer before dinner, especially when the sun is setting over the Navasink.   This restaurant features fresh seafood, salads and plenty of shrimp, clam and mussel appetizers.  They have indoor and outdoor dining rooms.  Their entrees are priced around $25.  They do accept credit cards.  They cater to an older sophisticated crowd and the dress is dressy casual.

I can’t say enough about the town of Sea Bright, New Jersey, as it was my family’s first introduction to the Jersey Shore when we lived in New York.  Sea Bright certainly makes it easy for visitors to fall in love with their quaint town.

More of the Shore to explore!  Next we’re going to continue to head south along the Atlantic Ocean and explore the beachfront of Monmouth Beach and Long Branch, New Jersey, the home of the Seven Presidents Park.
