First Night Burlington, Vermont 2011

New Year’s Eve – Gaiety galore! Come to Burlington, Vermont and ring in the New Year with healthy, hearty fun.

According to the sponsors, “Burlington was the fourth city in the world” to plan so many activities for young and old that even the college kids prefer taking part in it, rather than the usual all-night bash.

First Night begins at noon on December 31st and winds down (to all legitimate extents and purposes) at midnight. Buy a one price “Button” that admits you to all except the Flynn Theater and the Memorial Auditorium Shows, all over town, all day, all night. Button and entrance prices and online orders.

Browse the Art Exhibits, laugh at the Comedians, watch the Dancers and enjoy the Musicians of every style from jazz to soul, or the Vermont Youth Orchestra to Atlantic Crossing. Some events are on Church Street, the “no car” brick promenade lined by restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, book stores, jewelry, fashion and other enticing shops. Events take place elsewhere around this vibrant town of many colleges: UVM, Champlain College, Burlington College, St. Mike’s in nearby Winooski.

Burlington has provided plenty of parking, including access for the handicapped for this all-weather event. Large University lots are serviced by jitney buses. After noon on Dec. 31st, on-street parking will be free, and the overnight ban will be lifted. Caveat: if it snows, cars will have to be removed for plows. The organizers suggest lots of warm clothing; the weather can get nasty.
