Is Sarah Palin’s Alaska the real Alaska?

Wasilla, AlaskaA record number of people watched the TLC network show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. But did they see the real Alaska?

The premier of this mini-series featured brown bears cavorting in a stream while the Palin family looked on from a small fishing boat. We enjoyed seeing Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley as the family arrived on a glacier in a small plane, and we briefly visited the Palin family and their voyeur neighbor in Wasilla.

So is this reality? Yes, this was the real Alaska and you can easily visit and see such sights as well. I had the pleasure of touring the area around Anchorage, Alaska and took a train into Denali National Park this past summer. I was there less than a week but the memories and photographs I took on the journey still thrill me.

Denali National Park
We took the first class Alaska Railroad trip from Anchorage to Denali.  Alaska is vast. For the traveler who only has a few days, one of the most beautiful and accessible wilderness spots to see is Denali National Park. You can take a bus to the park, drive or luxuriate and travel by train. The train trip takes approximately 8 hours each way.

While at Denali National Park we took the Denali Wilderness Tundra Tour. TWT is a 7-8 hour excursion into the park with a certified driver-naturalist. Going deep intoBear in Denali National Park the wilderness, this tour provides in-depth information about the history of the park, while maintaining a keen eye in search of wildlife and photography opportunities. While on the tour we saw brown bears, grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and more.  It was an exciting all-day trip and a must-do.

So we saw bear, enjoyed Denali National Park and pondered the idea of taking a plane up onto Mt. McKinley just like the Palins did. Due to the cloud cover that wasn’t possible, but there are wonderful flight-seeing opportunities for the visitor.

The Real Alaska
After seeing the first episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska, I’d say you are seeing the real natural beauty of Alaska. Is Sarah Palin’s Alaska, the real Alaska? You betcha!
