Loew’s Ventana Canyon Resort – A Tucson Desert Oasis

Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort Tucson

A true desert oasis awaits you at Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort

There is more to be found at Loew’s Ventana Canyon Resort than two championship golf courses, a luxury  hotel, state of the art meeting facilities and full-service spa. You’ll find Loew’s Ventana Resort to be a luxurious oasis set against the stunning backdrop of Tucson’s Santa Catalina Mountains.

This natural setting, coupled with the resort’s commitment to partnership with the Tucson community,  has made the 93 acre oasis a true Arizona experience for visitors. The setting and the resort’s integration into the natural setting is what sets this resort apart from many other Tucson choices.

You’ll know you are in Arizona as soon as you drive up to the pueblo-inspired buildings with immense Saguaro Cacti (which grow only in Arizona) guarding the entrance to the lobby. Desert landscaping, intentionally conserved during construction, lets you know that you are now in the Sonoran desert.  Look for desert wildlife such as lizards, Roadrunners and Cactus Wrens who share the resort property with visitors.

Least you think your visit will be all sand and cacti, let me assure you that it is not. That is why I found this resort to be a true oasis. The resort takes advantage of a natural waterfall and has built a series of pools that flow through the resort ending in a marvelous koi pond and waterfall. The two Tom Fazio-designed championship golf courses provide visitors with plenty of green vistas while golfers will enjoy the challenge of the courses that take them past stately Saguaro cacti and canyons.

Verdant vines drape the natural colored buildings while bright flowers such as Bougainvillea bring a festive look to the grounds. Throughout the lobby areas, tropical floral arrangements add to the feeling of being in a desert oasis.

Enjoying the Desert Oasis – Relaxation
A great way to learn about the desert and acclimate to the setting is to walk the fascinating Loews’ Nature Trail which was developed  in partnership with the world-acclaimed Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Tucson Botanical Gardens.  You’ll be surprised to find an immense flowing waterfall at the end of the trail. dotted along the trail offer opportunities for rest and meditation. Overlooks provide a romantic setting for sunset watchers.

Most accommodations have a patio or balcony where you can sit and soak in the beauty of the mountain vistas. The views of the mountains and the city of Tucson are mesmerizing  and will provide you with an opportunity to relax. And, as you toast the sunset and the rising of the moon with a Margarita, you may be lucky enough to see some small bats keeping  the air insect-free.

The Lakeside Spa with its signature treatments featuring local natural ingredients will provide you with even more opportunities to relax. Try the Sacred Clay Energy Restorer. Featuring warm Sedona red clay as part of the three-step treatment, you’ll come out of the 80 minute experience relaxed and renewed. Touches of local culture such as Juniper Cedar wood and a burning sage bundle draw from Southwest Native American tradition. The Spa is small yet the offerings are wide ranging. A spa pool is available for lap swimming or relaxing.

Enjoying the Desert Oasis – Activities

World Class Golf – There are two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses- Loews Ventana Canyon Resort’s Mountain course and Canyon course – and they both come with striking Sonoran Desert backdrops.

Hiking – Of course you can take the short Waterfall hike right on the resort property. A quick drive down the road will get you to Sabino Canyon National Recreation area with a myriad of hiking trails both easy and difficult. The breathtaking canyon can also be seen via open-air tram rides. Many people hike the vehicle-free road into the canyon and investigate side trails. This is a must-do for any visitor to the area.

Tennis – Outdoor lighted tennis courts

Swimming –
There are two pools and a large hot tub area. The pool at the Spa ($10 per day without a spa treatment) is an adults only pool.

Kids – A playground, pools, croquet court and more will keep the children busy on your visit to Loew’s Ventana Canyon Resort. A suggested day trip for families is to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. a combination zoo-botanical garden. I thought my Granddaughters would love feeding the huge koi in the resort’s koi pond. Just ask the concierge for some fish food!If you have a pet in your family, know that Loew’s allows pets!

Entertainment – Yes, the resort is in the foothills of the beautiful Santa Catalina mountains, but you can also take a quick 30 minute drive into Tucson for special events, activities and museums. The resort offers music nightly.

Dining – Loew’s Ventana Resort takes great pride in cooking with a Southwestern flair. Some ingredients are found locally. A partnership with an enterprise of the Tohono o’odham people has allowed the resort to feature some locally grown Native American products such as Tepary Beans. There are three dining venues. We enjoyed a relaxed evening at Flying V Bar & Grill (great views). The resort provides opportunities for al fresco dining as well as indoor dining.

The concierge can arrange tickets or advise you on endless opportunities for fun and recreation in the area.

I  thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Loew’s Ventana Resort. We were in Tucson for the All Souls Procession  and found the 30 minute drive downtown very easy. While at the resort, we relaxed, marveled at the vistas and did some hiking.  The service at the resort was excellent and met my expectations.

I would recommend a stay at Loew’s Ventana Resort for a true Arizona desert experience. Oh yes, and they do have award-winning golf!
