Relax or sightsee at this Arizona resort

The problem with staying at the InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley, AZ is choosing whether to soak in your room’s sunken tub or take a luxurious shower with dual shower heads in a space as large as some hotels’ entire bathroom.

Next choice is where to relax with a drink: the room’s 110 square foot private patio wrapped in a comfy robe while gazing at Scottsdale’s Camelback Mountain  or change to Capris and sandals to go down to the resort’s MBar for tapas and 100 percent agave tequila.

Another problem is scheduling. There is Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in Scottsdale, the Desert Botanical Garden further down the road in Phoenix and the Joya Spa.

Fortunately, Joya, one of the area’s top spas (it really is busy), is right on the property. If possible allow half a day to enjoy Joya. Even if you don’t need a pedicure, add one to the schedule to relax in the spa’s zero gravity pedicure chair.

Then, top off the spa experience with a lunch of mezze with lavosh, Peekytoe crab cakes or golden gazpacho on the Joya Terrace. You won’t have to bring your calorie counter – the menu lists carbs, fat grams and calories for each dish.

Forget calories in the morning with a scrumptious platter of French toast or a you-build-it omelet in Prado, the resort’s fine dining restaurant. Or grab a pastry and coffee in the Crave Café, a small gourmet wine/coffee bar that is also a bakery/deli stop.

Busy season is just after New Year’s Day so if thinking about staying there to escape winter’s cold and snow you should start checking available rooms and dates in the fall.
